Controller of Defence Accounts Chennai
CDA Chennai has the earliest link with the Defence Accounts Department. The Year 1675 - It was here in Chennai, the DAD was born at the Fort St. George (which is now the seat of power of the Government of Tamil Nadu) which was built by the East India Company at Chennai in 1639. The present day CDA was known as Pay Master. The office of the Military Pay Master was institutionalised after the adoption of the Articles of War in the British Parliament in 1747, and it thus became the official date of origin of the DAD. After two centuries of evolution and metamorphosis as Military Paymaster, Military Paymaster General, Purser General, Commissionery General, Controller of Military Finance and Controller of Military Accounts, the Department has taken the present avatar of Defence Accounts Department with the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) as its head, from the 1st of October, 1951.
